Wenn Humor und Mozartsonaten zusammentreffen
Pianist Michael Wessel widmet sich Mozart „The Humourist“ (Ars Produktion 2026)

When humour meets Mozart’s sonatas
Pianist Michael Wessel pays tribute to Mozart in ‘The Humourist’ (Ars Produktion 2026)

Having already explored all of Mozart’s piano sonatas on six CDs, pianist Michael Wessel now turns his attention, on his seventh 66-minute album, to Mozart’s humorous piano sonatas – that is to say, his works characterised by a humorous underlying mood and almost bawdy humour.
The programme features the Modulating Prelude, K. deest, played in rapid runs, and his Sonata No. 1 in C major, K. 270, with its vigorous and lively Allegro, the emotive and varied Andante, and the cheerful and spirited Allegro. This is followed by Sonata No. 2 in F major, K. 280, with its brisk and energetic Allegro assai, the thoughtful and emotive Adagio, and the light and lively Presto. Sonata No. 3, in F major, K. 280, features the rapid runs of the hasty Allegro, the contemplative and heartfelt Andante amoroso, and the spirited, forward-driving Rondeau, Allegro. The programme concludes with the cosy, heartfelt Minuet and Trio in D major / D minor, K. 7. The outstanding recording quality is also particularly impressive here.

Michael Wessel’s interpretation, played with clarity, precision and powerful expression on the Steinway, is impressive. He studied piano, composition, music theory and music education at the conservatoires in Detmold and Stuttgart and is currently Professor of Piano Performance at the University of Church Music in Bayreuth. He is also active as an author. He has written the texts for the comprehensive booklet, which is devoted to all the works performed, featuring detailed musical analyses in German and English, translated by Hannes Rox.
This album is a logical continuation of the project to record all of Mozart’s sonatas and makes one want to listen to the previous six Mozart albums as well.
