Auf eine Reise durch die Klaviersonaten des reisenden Wirbelwinds Mozart begibt sich der Pianist und Professor für Klavierspiel, Liedgestaltung und Methodik an der Hochschule für Kirchenmusik in Bayreuth, Michael Wessel, anhand von fünf ausgewählten Werken.

Als Einstieg wählt er Mozarts Sonate Nr. 7 in C-Dur (KV 309), deren erster Satz in spritzig-leichtfüßiger Interpretation, nuanciert und mit beherztem Anschlag erklingt. Der zweite Satz zeigt sich nachdenklich-bewegt, aber dennoch leicht und eingängig interpretiert. Auch der dritte Satz bezeugt Wessels große Spielfreude und den hervorragenden durchscheinenden Klang seiner Interpretationen. Es folgt die Sonate Nr. 8 in D-Dur (KV 311) mit einem leicht beschwingten, dennoch akzentuierten ersten Satz, der die einzelnen Stimmen wie Gesprächspartner herausklingen lässt. Der zweite Satz zeigt sich emotional und melodiös, der dritte verdeutlicht brillant interpretierte Läufe und Triller. Mozarts Sonate Nr. 9 in a-moll (KV 310) beginnt intensiver und energischer, kontrastiert also zu den zuvor gehörten Werken. Der zweite Satz ist gefühlvoll interpretiert, dennoch mit leichtem, aber auch nachdenklichem

Unterton. Der kurze dritte Satz ist fröhlich-beschwingt. Es folgen zwei Skizzen aus dem Londoner Skizzenbuch des 8-jährigen Mozart, so der energisch-impulsive Sonatensatz g-Moll und der langsamere Siciliano in d-Moll. Abschließend ertönt Mozarts Sonatensatz B-Dur (KV 400) in schnellem Tempo.

Zum Verständnis der Werke schrieb Pianist Michael Wessel selber die Booklet-Texte in Deutsch und Englisch in Bezug gehalten zu Mozarts Lebensweg und den auf der CD veröffentlichten Werken. Dazu erfolgen Werkserläuterungen und Beschreibungen der einzelnen Stücke.

Interpret Michael Wessel studierte Klavier, Komposition, Tonsatz und Schulmusik an den Musikhochschulen in Detmold und Stuttgart und schreibt auch Bücher mit Bezug zum Klavierspiel.

All of Mozart's piano sonatas are featured in ‘Mozart – The Travelling Whirlwind’ (ARS Production 2025)

Michael Wessel, pianist and professor of piano performance, song interpretation and methodology at the University of Church Music in Bayreuth, embarks on a journey through the piano sonatas of the travelling whirlwind Mozart, based on five selected works.

He begins with Mozart's Sonata No. 7 in C major (KV 309), whose first movement is performed in a lively, light-footed interpretation, nuanced and with a spirited touch. The second movement is thoughtful and moving, yet interpreted in a light and catchy manner. The third movement also testifies to Wessel's great joy in playing and the outstanding, translucent sound of his interpretations. This is followed by Sonata No. 8 in D major (K. 311) with a slightly lively, yet accentuated first movement, which allows the individual voices to sound like conversation partners. The second movement is emotional and melodious, while the third features brilliantly interpreted runs and trills. Mozart's Sonata No. 9 in A minor (KV 310) begins more intensely and energetically, contrasting with the works heard previously.

The second movement is interpreted with feeling, yet with a light but also thoughtful undertone. The short third movement is cheerful and lively. This is followed by two sketches from the London sketchbook of the 8-year-old Mozart, the energetic and impulsive sonata movement in G minor and the slower Siciliano in D minor. Finally, Mozart's sonata movement in B flat major (K. 400) is played at a fast tempo. To aid understanding of the works, pianist Michael Wessel himself wrote the booklet texts in German and English, relating them to Mozart's life and the works released on the CD. These are accompanied by explanations of the works and descriptions of the individual pieces.

Performer Michael Wessel studied piano, composition, music theory and school music at the music academies in Detmold and Stuttgart and also writes books related to piano playing.
