Aquarelle von Niels Wilhelm Gade erklingen farblich auf dem Klavier. Pianistin Marie-Luise Bodendorffs neues Album „Niels Wilhelm Gade. Ausgewählte Klavierwerke“ erschien bei ARS-Produktion (2025).

Der dänische Komponist und Dirigent Niels Wilhelm Gade ist hierzulande zumeist durch seine sinfonische und konzertante Musik bekannt, dennoch schuf er auch Kammermusik, Bühnen- und Chorwerke und Klaviermusik. Besonders letztgenannte fristet immer noch ein Schattendasein, das ist umso unverständlicher, da sich Gade lebenslang dem Klavier gewidmet hatte. Ursache ist aber möglicherweise, dass Gade selber kein professioneller Solo-Pianist war und so seine Klavierwerke nicht selbst bekannt machen konnte. Seine Klavierwerke umfassen virtuose Klaviersonaten, aber auch kleinere, weniger anspruchsvolle Charakterstücke und kleinere Gelegenheitswerke.

Auf diesem Album erklingen in chronologischer Reihenfolge „3 Klavierstücke“ (1837), die „Kleine Claviergeschichte f-Moll“ (1839), „Aquarellen. Kleine Tonbilder, op. 19, Vol. 1“ (1849), „Aquarellen. Kleine Tonbilder, op. 19, No. 2“ (1850), „Sonate e-Moll, op. 28“ (1840, rev. 1854), „Andantino cis-Moll o. op.“ (1860), und „Neue Aquarellen. Kleine Tonbilder, op. 57“ (1881). Pianistin Marie-Luise Bodendorff gelingt sowohl ein nuancierter Ausdruck, als auch eine emotionale Spannweite und holt ein großes Klangspektrum aus dem Instrument heraus. Somit brillieren Gades Werke in gefühlvollem, sehr lyrischem Ausdruck, voll melodischer Einfälle und wechselnder Tempi. Auch gerade die Aufnahmequalität der CD ist hervorragend.

Die Interpretin Marie-Luise Bodendorff studierte Klavier an den Musikhochschulen in Karlsruhe, Hannover und Kopenhagen und ist seit 2023 Dozentin an der Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe. 2021 und 2022 erschienen ihre ersten beiden CDs, gewidmet dem Oeuvre des Komponisten Friedrich Kuhlau.

Zum bereichernden Verständnis der gehörten Klavierwerke finden sich im Booklet Informationen zum Leben und Werk des Komponisten Niels Wilhelm Gade, zu seinen einzelnen Klavierstücken und zum Lebenslauf des Pianistin, geschrieben in Deutsch und Englisch von Dr. Werner Bodendorff und Hannes Rox. Eine sehr empfehlenswerte 70-minütige Einspielung zu Niels Wilhelm Gades Klavierwerken, die den Horizont über seine bereits bekannte sinfonische und  konzertante Musik hinaus, weit öffnen und Einblicke in spannende Gade’sche Klavierwelten bieten.

Watercolours by Niels Wilhelm Gade resound in colour on the piano

Pianist Marie-Luise Bodendorff's new album ‘Niels Wilhelm Gade. Selected Piano Works’ was released by ARS-Produktion (2025).

Danish composer and conductor Niels Wilhelm Gade is best known in this country for his symphonic and concert music, but he also composed chamber music, stage and choral works, and piano music. The latter in particular still leads a shadowy existence, which is all the more incomprehensible given that Gade devoted his entire life to the piano. However, the reason for this may be that Gade himself was not a professional solo pianist and was therefore unable to promote his piano works himself. His piano works include virtuoso piano sonatas, but also smaller, less demanding character pieces and smaller occasional works.

his album features, in chronological order, ‘3 Piano Pieces’ (1837), ‘Little Piano Story in F minor’ (1839), ‘Watercolours. Little Tone Pictures, Op. 19, Vol. 1’ (1849), ‘Aquarelles. Petite Scènes, Op. 19, No. 2’ (1850), ‘Sonata in E minor, Op. 28’ (1840, rev. 1854), ‘Andantino in C sharp minor, Op. 57’ (1860), and "New Aquarelles. Small Tone Pictures, Op. 57 (1881). Pianist Marie-Luise Bodendorff succeeds in achieving both nuanced expression and emotional range, drawing a wide spectrum of sound from the instrument. Gade's works thus shine with soulful, highly lyrical expression, full of melodic ideas and changing tempos. The recording quality of the CD is also outstanding.

The performer Marie-Luise Bodendorff studied piano at the music academies in Karlsruhe, Hanover and Copenhagen and has been a lecturer at the Karlsruhe University of Music since 2023. Her first two CDs, dedicated to the oeuvre of composer Friedrich Kuhlau, were released in 2021 and 2022.

To enrich your understanding of the piano works you hear, the booklet contains information about the life and work of composer Niels Wilhelm Gade, his individual piano pieces and the pianist's biography, written in German and English by Dr Werner Bodendorff and Hannes Rox. The album cover is also fitting, featuring a watercolour-style portrait of the pianist in various shades of red, referring to Gade's ‘Aquarelle. Kleine Tonbilder’ (Watercolours. Small Sound Pictures) for piano.

A highly recommended 70-minute recording of Niels Wilhelm Gade's piano works, which broadens the horizon beyond his already well-known symphonic and concert music and offers insights into Gade's exciting piano world.
